Base Oil

Base Oil

What is base oil?

What is base oil? First you need to know base oil is a type of oil that is the main base for lubricants. In other words, the most important component of different types of lubricants is this type of oil, which is used in all cars and has extraordinary applications.

Among the products that are obtained from this oil are: Greases, engine oils, metal processing fluids, etc. are important points about this product, which is obtained by refining crude oil, and the main and main components and components of this product are paraffinic and aromatic compounds.

It should be noted that this oil has several uses, the most important of which is the lubricating property. In other words, this product can be obtained from oil and non-oil sources, and the characteristics of this product largely depend on the type of crude oil and how it is refined.

types:

In general, these products are produced in three different types, which are:

  • Mineral base oils:

This oil is obtained from crude oil and directly and without intermediation from crude oil refining.

  • Natural base oils:

The components of this type of oil are a mixture of triglycerides that increase the flash point of this type of oil compared to mineral oils. One of the disadvantages of this oil is that its pour point is high, so by using suitable additives, this problem can be solved.

  • Synthetic oil:

Synthetic or synthetic oil is produced from a combination of one or more specific organic components with low molecular weight and in completely controlled conditions.

Production processes:

In recent years, in order to increase and improve the quality and performance of oil, some processes have been implemented, which are:

  • Mixing with clay:

Clay was used to absorb and remove some dangerous and toxic compounds in the base oil. These compounds are usually unsaturated (aromatic) and very polar compounds containing nitrogen and sulfur.

  • Wash with acid:

Concentrated sulfuric acid is added to the product to react with the worse compounds in the oil, turning them into sludge so that they can be separated. Although the process effectively improved the oil, it was costly and has been phased out of North America due to environmental concerns about acid and sludge.

  • Washing with SO2:

Purification with anhydride sulfur can in fact be called the main extraction process to remove impurities from this oil with the help of a circulating solvent. Although this process is practically obsolete now, it can be used as a guide to access a process known as “solvent extraction” such as furfural.

Properties and benefits:

  • Improve thermal resistance and stability
  • Improve and strengthen viscosity
  • Features and characteristics developed at low temperatures
  • Very high lubricity
  • Prevent the formation of sediments and sludge-forming materials
  • Very high resistance in different conditions and …
  • Very high efficiency

Uses:

Base Oils Used to produce products such as lubricants, engine oils and metalworking fluids. Different products require different oils and compounds. One of the most important factors is the viscosity of the liquid at different temperatures. Whether the crude oil is suitable for preparation in the base oil or not is determined by the concentration of the base oil molecules as well as the ease of these extractions.
